Big Sky, MT … The Hebgen Lake Ranger District is seeking comments on a proposal to authorize the operation and maintenance of Red Cliff Shooting Range.  This existing site is located adjacent to Highway 191 at approximately mile marker 39, south of Big Sky, Montana.  The purpose of this project is to continue providing the public with a target shooting range which provides for safe target shooting, while reducing overall impacts of target shooting on the larger landscape. A special use authorization for the operation and maintenance to an interested organization will assist in ensuring this area will be maintained to acceptable standards.  The Forest Service desires for this use to continue.

The Red Cliff Shooting Range location has long been used by Gallatin County residents and visitors to the Big Sky area. Use of the site has been encouraged to reduce potential conflicts (safety, noise, sanitation issues) elsewhere in the vicinity, including the Taylor Fork drainage, which provides excellent habitat for wildlife, including grizzly bears, and recreational opportunities for visitors to the Custer Gallatin National Forest.

This existing facility consists of a gravel parking area adjacent to Highway 191, a wooden informational sign, three covered concrete shooting benches, and 25-yard, 50-yard and 100-yard target backstops. Operating and maintenance of this site via a special use permit, with terms and conditions, will improve the overall operation, as well as, reliable and consistent cleanup of the site (paper targets, shell casings, etc.).

This public scoping notice is available on-line at www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=55699 and at the Hebgen Lake Ranger District office located at 330 Gallatin Road, West Yellowstone, 59758.  Specific written comments on this proposed project will be accepted for 30 calendar days following publication of this notice on March 25, 2019.  Written comments must be submitted via mail, fax, or in person (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding holidays) to:
