It has been pretty accepted science that chronic wasting disease – an always fatal neurological disease that infects elk, deer and moose – is caused by prions, which are misfolded proteins. Turns out a scientist in Louisiana claims that’s not true. His research points to a bacteria as the cause of the disease. Other scientists disagree, saying the prion theory is well proven. But a Pennsylvania wildlife group is supporting the Louisiana scientist’s work in hopes of finding a field testing kit for the disease and even an eventual vaccination.
