SuperTag lottery is a win-win for hunters and conservation

Every year, eight lucky hunters win the opportunity for the hunt of a lifetime through FWP’s SuperTag lottery.

Montana has eight SuperTags, one each for moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, antelope, elk, deer, bison, and mountain lion. For $5, hunters buy a chance at winning one of these special licenses. The license is good in any Montana hunting district where the animal can legally be hunted—including the hard-to-draw areas.

For the 2019 SuperTag lottery, which was held in mid-July, more than 106,000 chances were sold to resident and non-resident hunters, generating more than a half million dollars for conservation. FWP uses the revenue to enhance hunting access and boost FWP game law enforcement. The program has raised more than $4.4 million since it began in 2006.

“The super-tag is an amazing opportunity for hunters. Imagine having an elk tag in your pocket and the whole state to hunt,” said FWP spokesman, Greg Lemon. “And the program is also critical for access and conservation. Hunters benefit, wildlife benefit and each year eight people get an amazing hunt.”
