Fish, Wildlife and Parks Region 4 will have two public information sessions regarding Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in north-central Montana. The meetings will focus on current and future management of CWD in the area.

The first meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Conrad Community and Senior Citizens Center, 311 South Virginia St., Conrad, on Tuesday, October 22.

The second meeting will also begin at 7 p.m. in the Marias River Electric conference room, 910 Roosevelt Highway, Shelby, on Thursday, October 24.

The meetings will focus on current and future management of CWD in the area.  Other topics will be a planned special CWD hunt south of Chester this fall and how to submit samples for CWD testing.

Two years ago, FWP discovered CWD in deer south of Billings and north of Chester.  Last year, CWD was discovered south of Chester near the Marias River.

CWD is an always fatal disease of deer, elk and moose and if left unmanaged can cause significant population declines over time.

It is not known to affect humans or livestock.

In FWP Region 4, hunting districts 400 and 401 have been designated as part of the Northern Montana CWD Management Zone.

To prevent the spread of CWD from areas in Montana known to be infected to other parts of the state, the whole carcass, whole head, brain or spinal column from any deer, elk or moose harvested within a CWD Management Zone may not be removed from that Management Zone unless the animal has tested negative for CWD.
