The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which operates the dams along the Missouri River from Fort Peck downstream, is working to establish a large new network of weather station monitors in five states, including Montana and Wyoming. The new stations will allow the agency and others to better assess soil moisture levels and snowfall in the plains. Since the record-setting high water year of 2011 the Corps has been working to improve its predictions on run-off.
