Way out West they have a name, for rain and wind and fire, to loosely quote the old song “They Call the Wind Maria” from the movie “Paint Your Wagon.” In northern Montana we have the Marias River which makes me think of that great old song. The Marias starts in the Rocky Mountains near Valier and travels east to join the Missouri River at Loma, just east of Fort Benton. Over the Memorial Day weekend I floated the lower, 57-mile stretch of the river for the first time. What a cool place it is, and it’s being discovered by more and more boaters and anglers. To learn more about the waterway, check out my story at https://billingsgazette.com/lifestyles/recreation/marias-river-a-paddlers-hidden-gem/article_20d72b91-a0c4-5c37-a1e0-4c203d14e216.html.
