DILLON, Mont., June 2, 2020 – Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest will continue to offer free personal-use firewood gathering for the remainder of 2020, but a permit will now be required.
Woodcutters are asked to call district offices to arrange for a free, hard-copy permit that will be issued by mail or other special arrangement. The permits will be valid through Dec. 31, 2020.
“We remain committed to providing services on our public lands, and we are excited to continue doing what we can to help those in need with free, permitted access to firewood,” said Forest Supervisor Cheri Ford.
The free permits allow for the removal of downed timber or the cutting of standing dead trees for personal firewood under most conditions. These free firewood permits do not apply to collecting products on other public lands, such as Bureau of Land Management-managed lands.
Permitted collection of more limited post, poles, or rails or for any commercial harvesting will continue for a fee. Please call your local district office for information on obtaining a permit.
All permits, whether free or paid, help the USDA Forest Service track usage and ensure important information is conveyed to permittees regarding wildfire safety, suitable locations, collection amounts and any other restrictions.
