The Montana State Record Chinook Salmon Record has stood since 1991. The state record caught by Carl Niles off the face of the Fort Peck Dam weighed 31.13 pounds. The fish was 38-inches long with a girth of 26.5 inches. To date, and the season is still young, there has been one salmon caught that weighed in over 30 pounds and a handful that have been in the 29-pound plus range. Most of the salmon being caught so far are over 20 pounds with quite a few of them being in the 25-pound range, give or take a pound or two.
The catching is still hit and miss, but the 2020 salmon season is off to a great start considering it is still July!
Will a new state record salmon be caught in 2020? Some of the anglers are optimistic that it just might..Stay Tuned………..
