ZIMMER REPORTS GREAT PERCH FISHING

Perch fishing in East Bay is premium. The story behind the recent picture should make this evident.

Roger Smart and I started late Monday afternoon around 4:00 p.m. Fishermen we met at the ramp near Kwatuknuk said the bite was good from 1:00 to 3:00 and then died.

We started in the southeast corner of the bay near where we saw other boats. Immediately we began to catch small perch as well as a couple of keepers. After a ½ hour we moved looking for larger perch. At this time we were in about a 3”depth. The 1st move gave similar results as our 1st place. After a 2nd move we began to hear grebes, a small fish-eating bird with a call similar to a loon. They are without fail the best indicator of large concentrations of fish. It took two more moves to finally locate them in near mid-bay in a 6’to 7’ depth. The perch we began to catch there were real beauties as the pictures show. (9” to 13”)

Amazingly none of the places we tried was without fish. That may have been just a coincidence but I think it probably indicative of the huge perch population in the bay.
