FWP offers a variety of college internships
FWP
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) is again offering college students an opportunity to gain practical experience by serving as interns for the agency. Students typically receive academic credit while completing practicum requirements and gaining experience.
FWP will fill positions around the state in a wide variety of posts including wildlife or fisheries biology, environmental studies, education, interpretation, outdoor recreation, range management, natural resources, statistics and more.
Students in the Missoula area will find two internship opportunities close to home this summer. The first internship, based out of Missoula and Lolo, is focused on interpretation and education in western Montana state parks and recreation areas. The intern’s primary responsibility will be to plan and coordinate a summer event to encourage children’s participation in the outdoors. To find out more, check out the FWP Web site, fwp.mt.gov, or contact Vernon Carroll by phone at 406-542-5533 or email at vcarroll@mt.gov. Applications must be postmarked by March 15, 2010.
The second internship focuses on Montana’s common loons, grizzly and black bears. Position highlights include conducting loon surveys; working to identify ways to increase public awareness about loons, bears and other wildlife; and giving special presentations at campgrounds and other venues. Interns may also help with nongame inventories, management and habitat work on local Wildlife Management Areas. Contact Kristi DuBois at 406-542-5551 or kdubois@mt.gov for more details on the position duties. Housing for this intern is available at the Blackfoot-Clearwater Wildlife Management Area, approximately 40 miles northeast of Missoula and just south of Seeley Lake. Applications must be received by March 1, 2010.
College students are urged to contact their career placement office immediately for current postings of all internship announcements, or visit the FWP Web site at fwp.mt.gov and click on “Find a Job with FWP” under Online Services. Students should read the announcements carefully before selecting one and applying as the details and requirements vary with each position.
For more information or questions about the intern program, contact Debbie Cheek, statewide intern coordinator, at 406-439-8299.
