All good things must come to an end, and Sunday marks closing day at Whitefish Mountain. In true Montana spirit, this ski hill refuses to go out without a bang, or should I say splash? Annual pond skim competition is scheduled for Saturday April 6, 2013 as part of closing weekend events. No one leaves the competition without getting wet!

And Outdoor Aly plans to be pondside documenting the excitement first hand. The setup goes like this:

Round #1- everyone will skim across the pond on either skis or snowboard. Those who make it across will advance to the next round.
Round #2- remaining skimmers will choose between a jump or limbo obstacle. Those who make it across the pond after the obstacle will advance to the next round.
Round #3- Ten $100 bills will be suspended above the pond and remaining skimmers will jump to grab cash until it’s all been claimed.

Prizes for best costume and crash will be awarded half hour after last skim. Event starts at the Lift Plaza at 2:30pm  April 6th for pre registered participants 21 and over.

The event always sells out for competitors, and upwards of 2,000 spectators are expected. Competitors MUST wear a costume and last minute spots opening up will be accepted based on best costume, so either bring your best costume or your camera.

Pond-skimming is a popular end of season for many ski hills in Montana, but Whitefish Mountain does it right. The energy of the crowd and creativity of costumes always make it a successful event. Check back on Montana Outdoor Radio Show website later in the weekend for photos and updated coverage of Saturday’s event!
