Names that Your Bird Dog Should NOT be Named

gundogmagThere are a list of names that the Pheasants Forever Blog states should NOT be used to name your bird dog.  The first name they use as an example is “Rooster”.  It seems natural to many, but here’s why they believe that “Rooster” is NOT a good name for your dog:

You’d think the problem for a pheasant hunter owning a dog named “Rooster” would be obvious, but I encounter a “Rooster” every year.  The problem with the name surfaces any time you hunt pheasants in a group.  The dog’s owner shouts “Rooster” only to have his entire hunting party jerk their heads and gun barrels to the sky only to see blue.  Meanwhile, the obedient “Rooster” returns to the oblivious owner as instructed.

Along with Rooster, there are a few more names, in particular, that this article states should be avoided when naming your bird dog.  Here they are:

  • Drake
  • Rascal
  • Trouble
  • Dizzy
  • Tank
  • Rampage
  • Buck
  • Huck
  • Luck
  • Puck
  • Tuck
  • Precious
