Hunting:

There have been reports of good success rates on forest service and state lands. Block management lands are also available in many areas. Forest service maps or GPS units with the Montana Chip are a great help in finding areas to hunt legally and successfully.

With all Montana hunting seasons either open or already closed it’s time to resupply for the next trip afield.

Cold weather clothing, boots, gloves, socks, ammo, camo, and more is available at Bob Ward’s. The cold snap is coming with snow already in the upper elevations. Check over your cold weather gear and come in for replacements or upgrades.

Fishing:

Canyon Ferry Lake rainbow trout are productive when fishing from shore using marshmallows or Powerbait. The Walleye are still productive towards the north end to mid-lake in deeper water around 20’ deep with a crawling harness with worm. You can also try vertical jigging with a chartreuse jig head tipped with a worm.

The Missouri River nymph fishing is good using Lightning Bugs, Czech nymphs, or Pheasant Tails. Dry fly fishing has slowed down but you can snag some trout early mornings or late afternoons with a caddis pattern. Streamers are productive, try a strip and pause with zonkers, black buggers, or sculpins. Most of the bugs have been livelier in the evenings so during the day don’t hesitate to have some fun with streamers as well.
