If you have ever been lucky enough to draw a permit and float the Smith River, chances are you had a memorable experience with once in a lifetime images in your head and on camera.  The Smith River is known for it’s clear water, trout fishing and unbelievable Montana scenery.  The Smith is Montana’s only permitted river and it is being threatened by a Canadian mining company.  They have partnered with an Australian Resources company to develop the project and are planning on applying for a mining operations permit this year.  The massive Copper mine would would be located at the headwaters of the Smith river and would expose the air and water to the arsenic and other toxins that would be pumped out of the mining area to avoid flooding.  Visit the “Save our Smith” website to learn more about this project and what it could do to the Smith River.
