At the end of a bumpy road 50 miles south of Big Timber, four-wheeling recreationists can find a cool spot to ride back into history. The old road along the Main Boulder River takes ATVers, motorcyclists and UTVers up to the old mining town of Independence. It was a booming spot in the late 1800s before a recession hit and the mines all closed. Now there’s not a lot left of the old mills, mines and cabins, but the Custer Gallatin National Forest still allows motorized recreation in the area that is surrounded by the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness.
