The Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks had surplus Trumpeter Swan Permits Available through FWP offices and online only.

Permits allowing the take of Swans will be for the central flyway only and does not include Freeze out Lake.

According to ducks Unlimited (http://www.ducks.org/hunting/waterfowl-id) Trumpeter swans were nearly extirpated as a result of over-harvesting and the widespread destruction and degradation of wetlands. In 1932, fewer than 70 trumpeters were known to exist worldwide.  Today increases in populations due to conservation effort by hunters have opened hunting opportunities for these massive birds.
