Happy New Year! (with Colonel Smoothbore)

As we enter 2016 I’ve been thinking about what subjects from 2015 were the most popular in this columsmoothy5n and what seems to interest its readers the most. From Facebook response, Christmas puppies are a really big hit, but this is first and foremost a gun column. Occasionally, a story about gun dogs is appropriate, but some information on the shotguns wielded by their handlers is probably more informative. Readers also seemed to like some of my advice on self-protection and crime prevention, I’ll offer more in the New Year.

smoothy6I hope to be able to shoot more new firearms this year and give you my first ismoothy4mpressions of those guns. Another subject that I haven’t yet touched on are air guns. These are very useful tools for practicing safety and marksmanship and teaching new shooters both. We’ll look at pellet, BB, and Airsoft guns in some detail in the coming months.

I’ll try to keep you up to speed on the latest innovations in firearms and accessories; always a fun subject for me, and if there are changes in firearms laws, I’ll try to let you know how those changes might affect you.

smoothy8smoothy2This is a very important election year and gun control is going to be a major topic in the debate. There is a lot of rhetoric about, and much of it is false. Many pols play fast and loose with various studies in an attempt to justify their positions. I’ll go into detail so you can decide just what is true and what is horse puckey.

smoothy3New ammunition is coming onto the market almost weekly so often I’ll report on what one might expect from the new stuff. The SHOT Show is coming in a few short weeks and for us “gun guys” it brings a sense of anticipation rivaled only by the opening of hunting season.

Let’s all resolve to be safer, shoot more, and enjoy our 2nd Amendment rights. Again Happy New Year.

Be safe and good shooting.
