trapping2Clayton Larson from Missoula sent this post on how he has been trapping up in Alaska this past winter.

Here is his story:

I’m spending the winter in Alaska and Ptarmigan Lake. I’m by myself over 100 miles from another person and the only way to get here is by bush plane. I’ve been trapping for wolverine, lynx, fox, coyote and beaver.  I’ve got several beaver, a lynx and now this nice male wolverine. It’s a little different country than what um use to in Montana, but I’m starting to get the hang of it.

How do you get food to your camp?

A bush plane comes in once a month or so and brings me fuel and food. I’m caretaking it for the outfitter Urban Rohli.  He is an Alaskan legend up here, and they need someone to watch over the place. And there’s six horses here that just roam the valley in the winter and fend for themselves. So it a pretty sweet deal to be a part of this trapline in the winter and I’m gonna guide for him in the fall, moose and Dall sheep.
