In 1981 while cutting firewood along the banks of the Yellowstone River between Laurel and Billings, Kerry Fritz and his nephew made an unusual discovery. Embedded in the 30-inch diameter cottonwood log about 3 feet up from the base was a knife that the tree had grown completely around. How had the knife gotten there? How long was it stuck inside the tree? And who made the unusual handle that didn’t have any rust on it?
To find out more about this odd discovery, check out my story on the Billings Gazette’s website at http://bgz.tt/crzdk.
