Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks will increase efforts to check for possible chronic wasting disease infection in Montana wildlife.

The disease has not been identified in Montana but officials believe its only a matter of time before it’s found in the state as the illness has been detected in neighboring states, the Helena Independent Record reports.

This year FWP will concentrate monitoring efforts in south central Montana with samples taken from harvested deer at game check stations. The monitoring is funded with help from Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Mule Deer Foundation.
