Kalispell, MT — The emergency closure on Noxon Reservoir in Sanders County has been reduced, effective June 7. A portion of the reservoir remains closed due to hazardous conditions near Noxon Rapids Dam.
Water flows have decreased, allowing for restored access along most of the reservoir. However, reservoir waters remain closed to recreation from the downstream side of Stevens Creek Bay, across the reservoir to the mouth of McKay Creek, to the dam.
This rule is effective while dangerous conditions exist and will expire when Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and partners determine the area is safe for recreational use.
FWP adopted the initial emergency closure on May 18 due to dangerous high-water levels, fast-moving currents, and compromised safety infrastructures. FWP filed an emergency rule closing a portion of the reservoir at the request of the Sanders County Sheriff’s Office and Avista Corporation.
Boaters and other recreationists should always be prepared for dangerous water conditions during spring high-water season, including:
- debris in water
- cold water
- logs that get lodged together and create a hazard where water can flow through and around them but a boat can’t get through
- bridge abutments that catch debris and create swirling waves
- turbid, muddy water that makes other hazards in the water difficult or impossible to see
- the possibility of capsizing and having to rescue yourself or others, or to warm wet boaters quickly to prevent hypothermia
