Bison Hide Tanning Demonstration at Travelers’ Rest State Park

Montana State Parks (stateparks.mt.gov) will host a Bison Hide Tanning Demonstration with Billy Maxwell at Travelers’ Rest State Park on Saturday, August 11 from 10am to 4pm.

Join Cultural Anthropologist Billy Maxwell for a demonstration of traditional bison hide tanning. Maxwell lives off the grid in a tipi and has been working with bison hides for most of his life. He will demonstrate the process of how to tan buffalo hides and talk about getting the process and texture of bison hides to match hides in museum collections.

Travelers’ Rest State Park, located in Lolo, Montana, is the only archaeologically verified campsite of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
