Sunflowers are amazing. Now is when our local farmers are enjoying their fields full of yellow blooming beauties. This local crop is becoming more popular in Montana. Here are some interesting thoughts about Sunflowers!

Sunflowers can grow the largest flower head of all flowers! The record is 32 ¼ inches. The tallest plant was 25 feet 5 1/2 inches tall.

Sunflower oil is used for softening leather, conditioning hair, wounds, cooking oil, medicine paint, animal feed and biodiesel fuel. Not to mention the “seeds” that are eaten by Baseball players.

These flowers can grow 8-10 feet in 6 months.

A single flower head can have up to 2000 seeds!

Sunflower seeds are black or striped. The black ones make oil and the striped ones make snacks.

Sunflowers follow the sun across the sky. There are over 60 varieties of sunflowers.

The oil of the Sunflower contains vitamin A and D.

The Sunflower is the only flower with flower in its name.

Enjoy!
