A grizzly bear shot by a hunter during a surprise encounter on Sept. 14 has not been found. Officials have combed the area after finding blood. The hunter reported firing several shots at close range from a handgun. The incident occurred not too far as the crow flies from an earlier grizzly encounter. In that case a grizzly sow protecting its cubs attacked a 69-year-old archer. The incidents are a reminder to anyone recreating in bear country to carry bear spray.
