From Gallatin County SAR:
On December 17, 2020 at 2:30 am, Gallatin County Sheriff Search and Rescue at Big Sky was called to search for an overdue snowmobiler. A 37-year-old man went snowmobiling on Buck Ridge on the afternoon of December 16, 2020. His snowmobile got stuck in the snow and he did not have the equipment necessary to get himself out.
Fortunately, he found cell phone service and contacted family. A friend was able to find the snowmobiler as he was attempting to hike out. Search and Rescue units remained on scene until the two men were safely back at the trailhead.
A good reminder for backcountry snowmobile excursions is to never venture out alone. A friend can help dig you out and take the sweet actions shots. If you or your friend are not familiar with the area, tread lightly or bring an experienced guide. Have all the safety equipment that you could possibly use and carry. If you perceive a need to summon help, please do it sooner than later.
