Montana kids don’t need a screen to have a good time—they just need a rod, a lure, and a little patience. And this May and June, you have two chances to fish for free—no license, no excuses, just good old-fashioned fun.

Free Fishing Weekends:

  • May 10–11 (Mother’s Day)
  • June 14–15 (Father’s Day)

Yep, Mother’s Day weekend and Father’s Day weekend are officially license-free in Montana. This is your moment regardless of whether you’re trying to introduce your littles to their first catch or just ditch some chores..

With Mother’s Day weekend this weekend, it’s a great time for anglers of all ages to hit the water. Tongue River Marina is plum stocked with live bait, including minnows, and will have its kitchen open Saturday and Sunday (closed Thursday and Friday). Extended weekend shop hours are Thursday–Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests are reminded that the shop does not manage camping or cabin reservations—those inquiries should be directed to Montana FWP.
