Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks game wardens are seeking information on a mule deer doe that was shot and left to waste on state land southwest of Augusta.

Hunters found the doe on the afternoon of Sunday Nov. 16 in a field west of the Elk Creek Road. They reported it to local FWP warden Per Wolfisberg who examined the deer and determined that it had been shot and killed where it was found as the bullet severed the spine at the base of the skull. It is believed that the crime occurred a day or two earlier.

“It’s clear that this deer was not shot by a legal hunter trying to lawfully fill their freezer,” said Wolfisberg. “Instead, this is an intentional act of killing and wasting a game animal, and the person who committed this crime needs to be caught and held accountable.”

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to call game warden Per Wolfisberg at 406-781-0244 or visit tipmont.mt.gov. Informants may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
