The Screen-Free Summer Walleye Strategy

The Screen-Free Summer Walleye Strategy

You don’t need a thousand dollars in sonar screens to catch mid-summer walleyes! The fish didn’t get the software update—they still rely on the same habits they always have. Ditch the screen time and use these six classic, analog tactics from Jason Mitchell Outdoors to fill the livewell:

  • Spinner Rigs & Bottom Bouncers: The ultimate search mission. Cover massive ground on big flats at 1.0 to 2.0 mph. Rule of thumb: Use 1 oz of weight for every 10 feet of depth.
  • Vertical Jigging Deep Structure: When fish stack up tightly on deep humps or rock piles, park directly overhead. Drop a heavy 1/4- to 3/8-oz jig straight down to keep your presentation perfectly vertical.
  • Trolling Crankbaits: Drive in S-curves over deep basins at 1.8 to 2.5 mph to trigger reaction strikes from roaming fish. Use lead-core line to get small lures down deep during summer bug hatches.
  • Midday Slip Bobbers: In clear water where boats easily spook fish, anchor away from isolated rock reefs. Float a live leech just inches off the bottom for a stealthy, irresistible presentation.
  • Weedline Walleyes: Don’t ignore the salad bar. Fish the deep, shady edges and inside turns of healthy weeds (8–15 feet) where walleyes hunt for perch and bluegills.
  • Live-Bait Rigging (Lindy Rigs): The ultimate weapon for stubborn fish. Crawl a walking sinker and a long, invisible leader tipped with a lively leech slowly along deep breaklines.

Electronics change, but fundamentals win. Find the structure, match the seasonal pattern, and you’ll catch fish without staring at a screen all day.
