About this tournament
Hosted by the Bighorn River Alliance (BHRA), the Bighorn Carp Tournament is one of Montana’s quirkiest and most fly-rod-friendly fishing contests. Carp on the fly is a fast-growing pursuit, and the shallow flats of Bighorn Lake (the reservoir formed by Yellowtail Dam) are an ideal proving ground.
The tournament is fly-fishing only and non-motorized — you’ll see kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, and waders working the flats and shoreline. In 2025 a sudden wind storm whipped up large waves on the lake and required a few rescues, so anglers should be prepared for fast-changing conditions, dress for the weather, and carry safety gear. Fifteen teams competed in 2025 with Brendan and Abby Chenoweth from Fort Collins, Colorado taking the win.
Proceeds support BHRA’s conservation, monitoring, and education work on the Bighorn River system. Public attendance at the weigh-in is welcome and the event has a casual, community vibe.
What to expect
Sight-fish the shallow flats early before wind builds. Bring carp-specific flies — small soft-hackle nymphs, hybrid carp flies, and mulberry/cottonwood patterns produce. A 6- or 7-weight rod with a stout leader handles big fish in skinny water. Non-motorized only, so paddle craft and waders are the game; have a wind plan and PFD ready, as Bighorn Lake can blow up fast.
History
The Bighorn Carp Tournament has become an annual rite of summer for the Bighorn River Alliance, drawing fly anglers from Montana and surrounding states. Past events have crowned teams from as far away as Colorado, and the event has carved out a niche as one of the few dedicated carp-on-the-fly competitions in the Northern Rockies.
