The Gallatin’s Report Card Is Really Good–All Day Long

Yellow Dog Fly Shop reported on October 8, 2026 that the Gallatin as of October 8, 2026: the fish are happy, the river’s basically a glass of tap water, and Mother Nature is about to show up to the party. Yellow Dog’s report puts it plainly — “Fishing has been good to great on the Gallatin,” and with a full-day window and a dry-dropper rig (with a straight dry fly as your backup plan), you have a green light. “The river is running low and clear,” which means spooky fish, long leaders, and no excuses. The hatches are a nice fall mix — Caddis, terrestrials, and BWO’s — and the October Caddis are lurking around waiting for someone to throw a big orange dry and feel like a genius. Ants and hoppers are still in play but fading, and here is something noteworthy: “Terrestrial action will likely come to a screeching halt this weekend with the expected winter storm.” So, basically, go now, or go streamer-fishing in the cold with wet hands and a bad attitude. Fish are still hanging in the faster summer water but will slide into slower holes as temps drop; set your dropper 2-3 feet under the dry and let the perdigon do the heavy lifting.
