Fly Fish Food’s October 11, 2026 report stated that Rock Creek is running 250 cfs at 5.27 ft — a ribbon of gin-clear water so low you could almost wade across it dry-shod. Beautiful. Deceiving. The creek is reading 46°F and the sky is throwing light snow, which means the trout have downshifted into winter economy mode: metabolism near idle, fins parked in the deepest, slowest water on the map. They are not chasing. They are waiting.
- Get deep or go home. Fish the inside seams of deep pools and the soft pockets behind big boulders. The fast riffles are a ghost town.
- Drift within 6 inches of the bottom. Indicator set long. Slow your mends to the pace of the current — which is to say, glacial.
- Think tiny and weighty. The fly box for this operation: Juju Baetis Tungsten #22, Black Zebra Midge #20, Roza’s Perdigon #18–32, and the Olsen Blowtorch duo (#20–28 Hare’s Ear, #22–24 Peacock) for dredging duty. Egan’s Frenchies (#12, olive and standard) and the Straggle Stone #12 are your heavy anchors; Top Secret Baetis #16 covers the rare surface moment. Even a Bionic Ant #16 isn’t dead yet.
- 5X–6X tippet, non-negotiable. The water is so clear the fish can read your leader like fine print.
| Window | Mission |
|---|---|
| 10 AM – 12 PM | Nymph deep through pools and boulder seams as the day’s warmth builds — your best shot at a fish that actually moves |
| 11 AM – 2 PM | The BWO/midge window. Watch slow tailouts and flats for sippers; switch to a Parachute BWO #22 if you see them rise |
| 2 PM – 4 PM | Last call. Terrestrials tight to brushy banks, in any sun-touched, sheltered water you can find — then the cold takes over |
The Forecast Intel
- Flow: 250 CFS — prime technical wading
- Temp: 46°F and falling; snow on and off
- Air: 27–44°F
- Clarity: Clear (recheck after the storm)
This is not a day for the fast water or the big fly. It’s a slow, small, deep game — one good drift within six inches of the bottom is worth fifty mediocre ones. Bring warm gloves, a short patient fuse, and trust the midge.
