The Flathead National Forest today announced the Quill Pig Project, located four miles south of Swan Lake, MT in the Swan Valley. The project aims to improve the diversity and resilience of forests stands, promoting resistance to insects and diseases, decrease fuel loading and tree densities to facilitate safer wildfire response, and contribute sustainable timber products to the forest products economy. The project proposes 3,921 acres of vegetation management, with 3,268 acres of commercial treatment and 653 acres of noncommercial understory removal.
The project will be analyzed under 7 CFR Part 1b, with the preparation of an environmental assessment (EA) to evaluate environmental effects of the Quill Pig proposed action under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Additionally, preliminary analysis indicates that the Quill Pig project qualifies for the use of emergency authorities authorized by the Secretary of Agriculture under Section 40807 of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, as determined by Secretarial Memorandum 1078-006.
Please provide input on the proposal by November 3, 2026.
