“There’s nothin like that good old Mtn, Dew, and them that refuse are few… “This tasty, carbonated soda is popular among many thirsty anglers. One of my Buddies, Norman, drinks 1-2 liters of this green liquid every day. My guess is that his innards are stained green.
Back in the day, we went on a trout fishing trip to West Virginia. My fishing crew was hooked on the Dew, so I tried to incorporate the tasty liquid into our meals. After we caught and fileted several limits of fat trout, it was time for a fish fry.
Instead of a beer batter, I thought I would try some Dew. It would add carbonation to the batter and a different flavor. For the side dish, I thought maybe add some Dew to potatoes! After a big fish fry, my crew would be fat and happy in the Moonshine.
Here was my Mountain Dew Mountain Trout recipe!
1 ½ cups of self-rising flour.
½ cup of cornmeal
Old Bay seasoning (you can also use paprika, steak seasoning, garlic, cayenne pepper. Old Bay already has most of these ingredients in it. Season to taste)
2 Tsp of hot sauce is optional if you prefer a spicier flavor.
2 large room temperature eggs
1 cup of the Dew! Any Lemon Lime soda will do. There is also a new Mtn. Dew Cream Soda flavor that I want to try.
1 lb. of clean skinless filets.
Oil for frying. Canola works fine but I have also used peanut oil and regular vegetable oil.
Mix the dry ingredients together. In a separate bowl, mix the wet ingredients. Once mixed, combine them. Heat the oil to 375 degrees.
Dredge the filets in the Mtn Dew batter and place into hot oil for 3-4 minutes. Allow the fried filets to drain. Serve with some fresh tartar sauce and garnish with parsley or chives. You can also serve the fish on a fresh bun with a slice of tomato or thinly sliced avocado. Be creative and make the Dew yer own!
I will publish the tater Dew recipe in the next article.
Enjoy this Hillbilly favorite!
