Elk hunter dies after grizzly bear attack in British Columbia

Oct-28-25 by Moosetrack Megan

An elk hunter who was seriously injured in a grizzly bear attack earlier this month near Fort Steele, British Columbia, has died.

The Conservation Officer Service announced the man’s death on Monday. The attack occurred on October 2 near Fort Steele, about an hour northwest of the Roosville border crossing into Montana.

Preliminary findings indicate the hunter may have been elk calling when a grizzly sow with cubs approached. Officials say the man fired a single shot in self-defense before being severely injured. He was airlifted to Kelowna General Hospital.

A week later, conservation officers found a dead bear in the same area. DNA testing confirmed it was the same bear involved in the attack.
