The Shield’s River is finally stepping back, which means the lower Yellowstone is back in business and firing on all cylinders. The Lamar hasn’t spiked despite a little park rain, so you are green-lit across the board.

Here is the lowdown on what’s hatching, what’s catching, and how to play it by George Anderson’s Yellowstone Angler as of July 8, 2026:

• The Big Bugs Have Left the Building (Almost): The massive salmonfly and goldenstone circus has officially migrated upstream. If you want to get into the chaotic giant-bug action, you’re going to have to earn it. As the report says: “If you really want to be in the thick of things you’ll want to engage in a hike and strike inside Yellowstone Park.”
• The Bug Buffet is Full: Even if you don’t hike into the park, the rest of the river is a literal soup of bugs right now. We’re talking Caddis, Sallies, Drakes, and PMDs.
• Time Travelers? Things are moving fast this year. The shop notes they already have “one report of seeing midnight stones way down low already, which is early but perhaps on par with the rest of the hatches coming a couple weeks early.”

If you’re casting dry flies, match the hatch with a Salmonfly (#4-8), Green Drake (#10-12), or a Chocolate Sedge (#12). If you’re going deep, drop a Black Rubberlegs (#4-10) or a Duracell Bomb Brown (#14-16). Want to trigger a aggressive strike from a big brown? Strip an Olive Sex Dungeon (#4) or a Yellow Silk Kitty (#2) through the cloudy water.

The flows are sitting pretty at a comfortable 5,450 CFS. The fish are looking up, the weather is cooperative for the moment, but the weekend heatwave is looming. As the report puts it: “Get out there and have some fun before it gets hot this weekend!”
