About this tournament
The Monster Cat Roundup is the can’t-miss event on the Montana Catfish Association calendar. Now in its 18th year, the tournament runs Saturday, July 18, 2026 on the Yellowstone River between the Montana–North Dakota state line and the Intake Diversion Dam, with weigh-ins and festivities on a sandy beach near Sidney.
The Yellowstone is the largest free-flowing river in the lower 48 and arguably the best channel cat fishery in the western United States. Past Roundups have produced state records and trophy fish in the 20-pound class. Teams launch from designated ramps along the eligible stretch, fish through the day, and return to Sidney for a river-side weigh-in. Pre- and post-tournament festivities are held at the Ranger Lounge in downtown Sidney.
The field is capped at the first 60 boats — registration typically fills well in advance. The format is boat-only, and live catfish weigh-ins make for a great spectator experience. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or just looking to spend a weekend on one of the West’s wildest rivers, the Roundup is the catfish event in the Northern Rockies.
Schedule
- Friday Jul 17 (evening) — Pre-tournament festivities at Ranger Lounge, downtown Sidney
- Saturday Jul 18 — Tournament day on the Yellowstone (state line to Intake Diversion Dam)
- Saturday Jul 18 — River-side weigh-in and awards
Entry & Prizes
Entry: Approximately $100 per team. Field capped at the first 60 boats. Confirm current fees with the Montana Catfish Association.
What to expect
Mid-July channel cats on the Yellowstone load up in deeper holes below seams, log jams, and rip-rap. Fresh cut bait — sucker, goldeye, or carp — fished on a slip-sinker rig is hard to beat. Look for the river’s seam lines where the main current meets back eddies, and don’t be afraid to anchor and let scent work. The Intake area and stretches near Sidney consistently produce the biggest cats. Bring strong rods, 30+ pound braid, and a good landing net.
History
Founded in the late 2000s by the Montana Catfish Association, the Monster Cat Roundup has grown into the Northern Rockies’ premier catfish tournament. Tournament directors Steve and Ashley Harris run the event, which has produced multiple state records and helped establish the Yellowstone River’s reputation as a world-class catfish fishery.
