Rivers are pleasant, but cold snap keeps lake ice around in Helena area outdoor report

Hi folks, Angie here from BOB WARD & SONS, with the BEST of fishing from the HELENA area!

Other than a bit of wind on the MISSOURI RIVER, the weather on the river has been pretty pleasant…the fishing has been excellent using streamers (like a White Jawbreaker or a Fathead in a 0 or 2) in the AM & midge emergers at the top of the day. And nymphs? GOOD STUFF—we like the Hogans S&M in Rust this week, or the infamous Mighty Mo Pink Soft Hackle, both in about an 18. With ski conditions having improved so much , the river seems to be less crowded, which is a REAL plus!

K, so we’re getting plenty of ICE on CANYON FERRY & Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir, with the latest cold snap…BUT reports are that trout are few and far between & the perch have virtually disappeared. A couple walleye were reported caught by one angler, but things have really slowed down here, especially on CANYON FERRY. You can still get Kokanee Salmon on the REGULATING RESERVOIR, tho….spoons with cocktail shrimp or chunks of corn are catching ‘em here!

Wherever you head in the state, don’t forget–it’s time to get your 2012 licenses as of March 1….something you can do easily at ANY Bob Ward & Sons!

Strapping your boards or board on this weekend? Great Divide Ski & SHOWDOWN (left) are continually adding new snow, with both places over 50” at the base and in the 60’s at the summit! Snow will continue to fall in these HIGH places for the next few days, creating the POWDER conditions you love. Finally….skiing you can sink your BOOTS into!

While you are in the HELENA STORE getting your new fishing license, check out our early Spring arrivals in all departments. You’ll want to have the latest and greatest before everyone else, & we’re getting it in, every day! Sit a spell and tell us where YOU’RE landing the Big Ones, & what you’re using! We’ll catch up again next week, folks!
