Jim Johnson from Hi Country Snack Foods in Lincoln called to give me a Holter (shown in the photo above) fishing report. “The trout fishing is picking up, at least from the last time I fished Holter,” he said. Jim had good luck with the firetiger syclops lure by trolling with his down riggers about 10-14 feet below the surface.

“The trout were bigger than the last time we were here and they were biting a lot better too!” Jim was fishing near split rock and by the cabins at Oxbow Bend. He also mentioned that the docks were in on the lower BLM campground and that they were heading to put the docks in the water at Log Gulch campground on Holter. Oh, did I mention Jim might be smoking up those trout?

I, also, spoke with Bill from Rock Creek Marina on the Big Dry at Fort Peck today. Bill said he was busy working making repairs to the campground and RV area by the marina, damage that was the result of last years high water. He has not had a lot of time to fish.

“To much work to do right now to get ready for the spring and summer fishing season,” Bill said. He also mentioned that it was a lot milder winter this year than last. “I never even started up my snowmobiles this winter.” Kind of nice for a change. Anyway, he is planning on doing a lot gravel and grading work this week. Bill also thinks that the fishing year is going to be very good this year on Fort Peck. Lets hope he is correct.
