Professional Angler Pat Slater’s Tip of the Week: Spring Spawning time is Feast or Famine!

Hello to One and All,

Wow, temperatures sored today, and it was a great to be on the water!  Spent the day on Big Horn Lake launching the boat at Barry’s Landing.  We covered the lake trying numerous locations, all the way to dam and back. There were very few boats on the water which proved to be an accurate forecaster of what we faced.

At the end of the day, on the way to get the truck and trailer, my fishing partner saw one boat with 3 nice walleyes.  Somebody solved the puzzle that baffled us.  Spring spawning time is feast or famine!

During the tough times I try to stay optimistic and keep working a variety of techniques and depths.  When you have a partner or two with you, I will have each person try something a little different.  Simple logic to increase the odds of finding what the fish want.

When legal, I try to rig some sort of tandem rig to maximize the number of baits in the water.  Today I pitched a jig with a “Stand Out” hook tied above; live minow on the jig and plastic minnow on the bare hook.  Although I didn’t score today, I believe this technique will work on future outings.  Something for my “bag of tricks”.

No matter the score at the end of the day, the spectacular scenery at Big Horn Lake makes the day very special!

Til next time….Be Smart and Be Safe!
