Fishermen:
Now is the time for fishermen who don’t have the expensive equipment needed to catch large lake trout on open water to have that opportunity. Jeff Posivio is an example of that with the two nice fish he caught through the ice in front of the public landing on Salish Point off the shore North of Polson. (see picture) Other bays that consistently hold these larger fish are Elmo, big Arm, Ducharme (East Bay), Somers and McGovern Bays.
The best approach is sinking a whole fish suspending it just off the bottom with a bobber. Sausage setups and large tube jigs tipped with cutbait also work well. It’s not a bad idea to use a smaller bait on another pole to target perch and or whitefish. While you are waiting for a monster fish to begin running your whole fish.
