Rock Climbing Bears Captured on Rare Video

We all know black bears can climb trees quite well, but what about a sheer rock cliff? Stephanie Latimer spotted two endangered Mexican black bears (momma and cub) climbing the Santa Elena Canyon wall while kayaking the Rio Grand last month in Texas’s Big Bend National Park. The bears were scaling the canyon wall like sure-footed bighorn sheep we see in Glacier Park.

Just spotting the endangered Mexican black bears was a rarity—only 12 adults are said to be living in the park.

And while there is no doubt black bears can climb, the sight of the momma scaling this steep rock canyon with her baby in tow is sure to make viewers a little uneasy as the little guy takes his time reaching the top. Check out the footage here:
