After going into defense mode against zebra mussels last year, Montana FWP is requesting $11.5 million to go on the offensive to fight the invasion for the next two years. $5.9 for 2018 and %5.5 million in 2019 is being requested. That may seem like a HUGE number to fight something as little as a mussel, but the figures are astronomical what the mussels could cost Montana if they were not to be stopped.
The Billings Gazette reports that maintenance of clogged pipes due to zebra mussels costs the power industry upt to $60 million a year and can cost more than $5,000 an hour due to pipe closures. The estimated cost to the United States is estimated to be $3.1 billion over the next ten years due to zebra mussels!
