Interesting New Items (with Colonel Smoothbore)

I’ve been rummaging around the SHOT Show press articles and I have found some new items that are quite interesting, at least to me anyway. Here are a few that caught my attention.

Sig Sauer® has introduced a new bolt action rifle that is quite different than anything they have in their large firearms inventory. The CROSS is a bolt action, detachable magazine rifle that weighs only about 6 ½ pounds. This gun is designed for the hunter as well as long range competition. It is chambered in .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, and a very interesting new cartridge, the Sig Sauer® .277 Fury. According to Sig Sauer®, the .277 Fury will push a 140-grain .277/6.8mm bullet to 3000 fps from a 16-inch barrel. This high velocity is possible because of a unique two-piece case design that allows for 80,000 psi maximum pressure! The cartridge utilizes a stainless-steel base and brass body with a case head  the same size as a 6.5 Creedmoor or .308 Winchester cartridge. It will be interesting to see if the Fury catches American shooter’s interest.

Remington® has come to the aid of those who would like to try trap shooting, but don’t want to spend a fortune on a dedicated trap gun. Enter the 870 Express Trap shotgun. Built on the venerable and reliable Model 870, the new trap model has a 30-inch barrel, a hardwood Monte Carlo style stock, and three interchangeable choke tubes. In addition, this 12 gauge chambers not only 2 ¾ shells, but also it will consume 3 inch fodder with no problems. With a MSRP of $ 609, I guarantee this dog will hunt.

Savage® has introduced a new rimfire for NRL22 competition, the B Series Precision rifle. Chambered in both .22 LR and .22WMR, this precision rifle will set a new standard for this particular competition discipline and at the suggested MSRP of only $ 599, it’s about ½ as much as most of the NRL22 rifles on today’s market. Set in an MDT billet aluminum chassis, the gun comes with an 18 inch threaded heavy barrel, 10 round detachable magazine, the excellent user adjustable Accu-Trigger™, and adjustable comb height and pull length. The Savage® B Series .22 along with the Ruger® Precision Rimfire give shooters great target rifles that use inexpensive .22 ammo. Really lot of bang for the buck.

In coming columns I’ll try to find more new items and accessories that help us all enjoy the shooting and hunting sports.

Be safe and good shooting.
