The Bighorn River Alliance has launched a research initiative to better understand the popular trout stream in south-central Montana. The studies will look at such varied subjects over time as bug life, vegetation growth, water quality and how they relate to different flows on the dam-controlled river. The group has also had the entire stretch below the dam aerially mapped to identify side channels that are no longer connected. Using grants and donations, the group has identified 13 that could be reopened with minimal dredging. Side channels provide important habitat for young fish, as well as possible spawning habitat.
