After a successful summer season, the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument transitions to its winter schedule.
The Missouri Breaks Interpretive Center in Fort Benton continues to provide orientation, information and self-guided tours, plus a 20-minute video about the monument. The center’s seasonal hours of operation after Labor Day are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The center will be closed weekends and federal holidays throughout the fall and winter seasons. For information about group tours and educational activities, please call 406-622-4000.
With hunting season ramping up, motorized boating restrictions will be lifted starting Sept. 16 for segments of the Upper Missouri River within the monument designated as part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System.
As the summer season winds to a close, so do the many recreation sites throughout the monument. Coal Banks Landing Campground will shut down its potable water system on Sept. 30, with the campground remaining open through Nov. 30. The campground gates will close Dec.1 for both Coal Banks Landing and James Kipp Recreation Area campgrounds. Currently, the water system at Kipp is shut off, however the RV dump station remains open for a fee of $10.00 per use. The Kipp boat launch will remain open until the river freezes.
Judith Landing Campground is set to close Oct. 15 at noon, with the boat launch remaining accessible year-round.
