Onion Rings are tasty and a great side to fish dinners. Rings that are deep fried are often dripping in oil and are not a healthy choice. You can certainly buy frozen onion rings, fries, tots, or premade dishes but… Who doesn’t love homemade?

Any deep frying means a lot of oil, maybe a propane jug attached to a basket fryer atop a burner, or at the very least a lot of greasy mess.

Air Fryers make quick and cleaner work of fried foods that are tastier and healthier. Because air fryers are simpler and easier to use, making fried fish, fries, hush puppies, or onion rings is more often.

Here’s a great Onion Ring recipe that will bring your Onion Ring Lovers to tears!

Ingredients

½ cup of flour

OLD BAY seasoning (you can also use just salt and pepper, paprika or.)

½ cup of Buttermilk (if you do not have Buttermilk, make your own. Add 1 Tbsp of vinegar or lemon/lime juice to a ½ cup of milk)

1 egg

1 cup of Panko breadcrumbs

2 tbsp. of olive oil and some spray oil.

1 large onion (the best sweet onions to use are Vidalia, Maui, or Walla Walla. They are sweeter and less pungent. White or Yellow onions don’t work as well with this breading.) Cut the onion into rounds ½ inch thick and separate.

You will need 4 shallow bowls or deep plates. Zip bags can work in a pinch. In the first bowl/bag, mix the flour, Old Bay, ½ tsp of salt.

The second bowl gets the Buttermilk, egg, and ¼ cup of spiced flour from the first bowl.

The third bowl/ bag gets the Panko Breadcrumbs, ½ tsp of salt, olive oil. Mix with a fork.

The fourth bowl gets half of the Panko breadcrumbs. You can switch to this bowl when the first bowl gets wet and sticky.

Pat the onions dry with paper towels. Using a fork, dredge the onion rings in the flour mix, then into the wet milk mix. Finally, dredge into the Panko bowl.

Lay the coated, single layer, onion rings on a sheet of wax paper/ tray. Put into the freezer for 15 minutes. This allows the Panko to stick better.

Cook at 400 degrees for 11-12 minutes. Spray some cooking oil on after half the time. You don’t need to turn the rings.

Serve with a spatula. Make a dipping sauce and serve alongside your favorite fish dinner.
