SPECIAL AVALANCHE BULLETIN ISSUED FOR FLATHEAD FOREST

With the broader snowmobile season opening tomorrow on Forest Service lands, and the snow accumulations today, please make sure to check conditions, plan ahead for your outings and have a communication plan in place. Be sure to carry safety equipment survival gear, transceiver, shovel and probe while in the backcountry.

SPECIAL AVALANCHE BULLETIN

The Flathead Avalanche Center in Hungry Horse has issued a SPECIAL AVALANCHE BULLETIN for the following areas:NWS Missoula MT – MTC 029 (Flathead County) …MTC 047 (Lake County) …MTC 053 (Lincoln County)

* WHAT…Dangerous avalanche conditions may develop if snowfall and warming temperatures arrive as forecast.

* WHERE…Terrain above 5000 feet in the Whitefish, Apgar, Swan, and Flathead Ranges, as well as southern Glacier National Park.

* WHEN…In effect from Wed 09:00 MST to Thu 09:00 MST.

* IMPACTS…Heavy snow may create slabs 1 to 2 feet thick that break on buried layers of old, weak snow. Large avalanches are likely; they may fail naturally or be triggered from adjacent slopes.

* PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…Avoid travel on or below slopes steeper than about 30 degrees. Shooting cracks, whumpfing sounds, and natural avalanches are clear signs of danger.
