The number of geese migrating through the Freezout Lake Wildlife Management Area on Friday was estimated to be 15,000.

That is the highest single day count of the season.

Lingering snow and ice have prevented birds from landing on the waterbody this season and counts are down from the 20-year average of around 40,000-50,000 birds a day at the migration’s peak.

Bird watchers will flock to the town of Choteau this weekend to view the birds and for the Wild Wings Festival, which includes several events that educate the public about the migration.
