Thompson Falls, MT — On Thursday, May 15, from 5:30pm – 6:30PM at the Elks Lodge in Thompson Falls, Montana State University Extension specialists and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks biologists will host a public meeting in Thompson Falls to share updates on a collaborative research effort focused on the interactions between bighorn sheep and domestic sheep and goats.

This initiative aims to better understand the risk of disease transmission between wild and domestic herds, with a particular focus on exploring practical strategies to maintain effective separation. Reducing contact between these species is key to preventing the spread of respiratory illnesses that can severely impact bighorn sheep populations.

The overarching goal of the project is to identify science-based tools and best practices that support the long-term coexistence of wild and domestic sheep and goats on Montana’s shared rangelands.

MSU Extension and FWP are actively seeking domestic sheep and goat producers or owners located within study areas to participate in the project. This collaboration will provide valuable insights and help ensure both livestock and wildlife populations remain healthy and sustainable.

For more information or to express interest in participating, please attend the meeting or contact your local MSU Extension office.
