It’s Monday! Want to see a 24″ Montana brown? Brown trout are targeted catches in Montana’s rivers. Originally introduced from Europe in the late 1800s, they now thrive in cold, clear waters like the Madison, Missouri, and Yellowstone Rivers. These fish can grow over 20 inches in the right conditions, with 24-inchers representing trophies for fly anglers. Brown trout are especially active during low-light conditions and often feed on smaller fish, insects, and even mice. According to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, brown trout are one of the most widely distributed trout species in the state (MT FWP).
